This Guide is presented as part of a periodical effort in sharing my experiences with other people who would like to create business enterprises and lead a successful life in the United Arab Emirates. This Fourth Edition has been updated and reviewed with additions to enhance its compatibility and utility while keeping it as simple as possible to serve its purpose in helping Nationals and expatriates who wish to establish a business in the U.A.E.

The leading objective of the guide is to help the reader in getting acquainted with the open and available opportunities on the market, as well as introducing the procedures, rules and regulations, and all the documents and paperwork required for business licensing and establishment. It also contains information regarding relevant Government authorities that should be contacted during the process. Hence, the book intends to guide the reader on every step to be taken, from the conceptualization of a business to its establishment.

Thence, I have drawn out the business environment prevailing in the United Arab Emirates and the region, evaluating hidden opportunities available in view of achieving a successful business model.

The Guide will allow the reader to comprehend the reality of the business environment, so as not jump into conclusions without having proper bases for one’s initiative and decision on right business fundamentals.

I have been in the field of business for almost 35 years, during which I have witnessed the failure of many projects and businesses and therefore realize the importance of sound guidance in such matters.

Some businesses that had been started with low potential have grown to become large companies having great influence on the National economy of the country. However, should we look into the failures and seek the reasons behind the unsuccessful demise of some businesses, we will notice the lack of know-how and experience in the field of business. Other reasons include: careless planning of a project, insufficient study of its dimensions, preparation of the business plan without deliberation, lack of sufficient capital, mismanagement, lack of preliminary market study regarding demand for the products and services; improper location, weak human resources, lack of proper business contacts and networking, and lack of knowledge about laws and regulations related to immigration, labor, local finance conditions that may lead to business failures.

Doubtlessly, the success, growth and prosperity of any project require appropriate and thorough knowledge about the business and proper planning prior to execution. The owner must at all time maintain full awareness and consciousness of necessary regulations and provisions. Patience offers itself as a main factor of importance, so as not to fall into the trap of fast cash in the rush for quick profits, but rather learn how to face difficulties and overcome obstacles. Above all, one should plan and define specific goals and show self-confidence while relying on a knowledgeable, trustful and respectable entourage.

Honesty is an entrepreneur’s finest wealth as it defines conduct and behaviorism with and towards others through honest manners and towards one’s self through dedication one’s business and clear and serious intentions of leading the initiative towards success. This should be an entrepreneur’s lead priority, irrespective of other preoccupations. What is more, it is vital for any type of business in any field whatsoever to keep track of any technological developments and state of the art systems and technologies in the business world, thus witnessing innovations not only on a daily basis, but instantly.

I do not claim this book to be infallible or an authority on doing any business in U.A.E. I only intend to provide the basic information that constitutes the basic and main steps as an initial guidance to beginners: it will concur in eliminating many of the flaws which otherwise may occur due to the lack thereof.

Special attention should be given to the qualities of an entrepreneur and the formula for success as I have codified in this book. This has all been derived from the successful background that I have built over years of experiencing and overcoming the challenges of different business conditions.

I hope for this book to be of guidance and help for the beginners in the world of business, thus enabling them to avoid the many-an-obstacle it may bring their way as well as the mistakes committed by my generation due to the lack of knowledge and guidance in handling business challenges.

With reference to the market study and the project planning, beginners would benefit farther from availing the services of experts to finalize a business plan, which is a pivotal element in the bringing up of a new business, notwithstanding the field, the sector, and the size of business or any other element.
